Spent about an hour yesterday with a 2015 graduate of the University at work at she came to see me because she said she's tired of being underemployed.
She's working in a job she does not like. She took it because it was the only thing she could find. There are couple things going on here.
First of all, upon talking with her and probing deeply, it turns out the degree that she has or rather the "major" concentration of study was really something she did not want to do but she felt it would get her out to college the quickest. So the bottom line is she still does really not know what she wants to do with the rest of her life.
Secondly, it turns out that the way she conducted her job search is the way I'm afraid most college graduates will do and that is strictly using the Internet and searching for posted jobs; things that my generation used to call "want ads."
So we talked a bit about the situation, and while I can't do anything about the poor choices academic major at this point; we were able to discuss a more functional way of job-search.
My point is that I believe while it may not be the only reason I am very sure it is the biggest reason most college graduates who feel they are "underemployed" are that way is because they don't know how to do a good functional job search. They're not getting into the hidden job market as Richard Bolles used to say.
Well I have talked about the right way to do a job search in previous posts on other blogs and out repost some of that stuff here; right now if anyone reads this, and you're looking for a job, and you have decided not to or you are just simply afraid of networking euro be searching for a job for ever!
